It was difficult for me to photograph this image because we were on horseback, trotting down a hill at Blacktail Ranch in Wolf Creek, Montana. We were moving quickly, so it wasn’t easy to hold my camera steady on horseback and there was no time to test out new shooting techniques. Photo tip: Know your equipment. It’s moments like these when you must be so familiar with your camera that you can set the exposures without looking.
For me, simplicity is the key to success. I never bring new gear on an assignment. I also always test my equipment at home first and I bring backups when I travel.
My essential gear for this photo was the Nikon D4S and a 24-70mm lens.
